Extending the Life of your Wood Fence

Extend the Life of Wood FencingWhen homeowners install a wood fence, they are making an investment on their home. A wood fence adds elegance and security to a home while also increasing the curb appeal and overall value of the home. While a wood fence holds many benefits for homeowners, they do require some maintenance from time to time. This may seem difficult; however, the steps you can take to extend the life of your fence are simple and inexpensive.

Some steps homeowners can take to extend the life of their wood fence are:

  1. Cleaning- Use a power washer or strong hose to clean your fence of dirt and debris. Soap for dishes mixed with a bleach solution can be effective at cleaning the fence while also removing any mold spores that may have grown.
  2. Repairing- Walk the entire length of your fence in search for areas that need to be repaired. This can include loose hinges, broken locks, and damaged boards. This is also a good time to ensure the posts for your fence are still firmly in the ground.
  3. Staining- Once your fence has dried, you can now apply a petroleum stain to the wood. This stain will seep into the top layer of the wood to protect your fence for longer.
  4. Finishing- Once you have finished these main steps, you can then decide to add a wood preservative to your fence as well. It is also a good idea to use grease to lubricate the locks and hinges of your wood fence to ensure they remain in working order.
