3 Tips For Saving An Old Fence

Here are some affordable ways that you can update, maintain, and revitalize your old fence.

After some years, your fencing may wind up looking dirty and out-dated. Depending on the size of your yard and the style of fencing you have, replacing the whole thing when the boards seem too worn to last any longer can be expensive, time-consuming, and difficult. But when it comes to homeownership, these things naturally wear and require attention. Here are some affordable ways that you can update, maintain, and revitalize your old fence.

1. Update The Frame

If your fence’s structural integrity seems just too far gone, it may seem like there are no other options outside of full fence replacement. However, replacing the entire fence can be very expensive and hectic, and replacing only the parts that need the most attention can leave you with an unsightly mix of new and old fencing. A creative workaround for this problem is to install a new treated frame and crossbeams while repurposing the old boards to keep a fairly streamlined look. This will entail removing all of the old boards from the frame, being careful to remove all stray nails and screws.

2. Replace Old Posts

Next, old posts should be cut off at ground level, being sure to wear a mask to cut treated wood and avoiding contact with the sawdust. New post holes can be measured out every 8 feet using a level string layout. Dig your posts about 26 inches deep at each spot in your fencing perimeter. Pour about 2 inches gravel into the post holes to allow for drainage before pouring in the post hole concrete.

3. Treat The Boards

Treat the new fence posts and frame, and finish the old boards as well to ensure it looks stylish and new! The old and new fence components don’t need to look exactly the same. Consider mixing it up with a different treatment on the new wood, or even repurpose wood finish that you have left over from previous home improvement projects. This mix of old and new will affordably update your fencing while refreshing the look of your outdoor space.
