Tips for Replacing a Rotted Fence Post

rotted fence post

If you’ve inherited an old fence, some of the post might have seen better days.

Does your wood fence have some trouble with rotting? Replacing a rotted fence post is something that you can leave to the professionals at Hercules Fence or attempt on your own depending on your skill level. Here are some tips for replacing a rotted fence post in your yard.

Get Everything Ready

When preparing to replace the rotted fence post, first you should mark your cut lines onto the post. The cut lines should be above and below every horizontal rail on your wooden fence. Using your circular saw, set the depth of cut so that it will cut through the posts but not into any of the rails. Use your circular saw to saw along each of the cut lines you drew.

Remove the Old

Now that you have cut out the old post, knock out the wood with a hammer. If there are screws securing the rotted fence post to the fence rails, use a cordless drill to remove them. To keep your fence stable while you work, slide a 2×4 under the fence on either side of the post. Slowly pull the good fence section away from the rotted post and remove it. Once you remove the big portion of the post, you can dig out wood that is left in the post holes.

Prepare and Install the New

Now that the old post is removed, make the fence post hole remaining a little larger with a post hole digger. Using a tight line, check the height of the fence panels. Put the new post into the hole that you dug and connect it to the fence panes by inserting the rails into the holes that you cut in the fence post. Use a level to make sure that the panels are plumb and then set the post by pouring gravel around the base. Install new decking screws into the new post to secure it to the rails and you’re all done!
