Get Your Fence Ready for Hurricane Matthew

residential fence maintenance

Don’t let this happen to your fence. Get ready for storm season.

As Hurricane Matthew approaches up the East Coast, it’s important to take extra care in securing your fence, your yard, and your home. Residents in Florida are experiencing a brutal Category IV hurricane that will take a huge toll on landscaping, fencing, and residential and commercial buildings in impacted areas. With inclement weather headed our way, how can you protect your investment and home from unnecessary damage?

Look Up

Many residents focus on securing things on the ground and forget that some of the most dangerous objects in your yard are lying right above your head! Examine the area directly above every part of your fence for any overhanging tree branches that could fall on top of it. Trim any tree limbs that are dead, damaged, or directly over portions of your fence. In a hurricane or severe thunderstorm, dead branches can causes hundreds of dollars worth of damage to your fence. Even worse, during events like Hurricane Matthew, branches can turn into deadly projectiles that can break windows, destroy siding, and cause extreme amounts of damage.

Take A Walk Around Your Home

Now that you’ve taken care of dangers above your fence, look for dangers around your fence. Remove all objects that you possibly can from your yard, keeping in mind that things you don’t move will be moved by Hurricane Matthew later. Patio furniture, toys, sports equipment, and even flowers in planters can become dangerous projectiles in a storm. Even if they don’t get picked up and taken with the storm, they will definitely be damaged from the heavy winds and rainfall.

Give Your Fence a Check-Up

If you haven’t already completed your seasonal fence maintenance, take some time to make sure that your fence is in good condition. Check for any rotting or damaged portions or posts. Take extra care to make sure that all of your fence posts, regardless of your fencing material, are properly secured in the ground. You should not be able to wiggle them at all in the ground. If you can wiggle them, the intense and gusty winds of Hurricane Matthew will definitely be able to wiggle them. Get any fence repairs taken care of before the rain starts to make sure that your fence and home will be safe during the storm.
