Tips for Painting your Wood Fence

Wood-Fence-Paint

As the weather begins to break, many homeowners are looking forward to tackling their outdoor home improvement projects. One of the more common and popular projects for homeowners is to paint their wood fence. Applying paint or stains to your wood fence can help maintain its structure while also breathing new life into a potentially older fence. However, there are many things to keep in mind when beginning this wood fence project. Approaching your fence in the wrong way could lead you to accidentally damage your fence instead of improve it.

When and How

The main purpose of a paint or stain is to protect your wood fence from moisture. Excessive moisture that seeps into the grains of the wood can cause rotting and mold. While the typically given time frame of painting is every 2 years or so, a good way to tell is through the beading of moisture. A stain or paint will cause moisture to bead atop the fence rather than soak through. When beading stops occurring, it is probably time to paint your fence. Paint tends to be less costly to purchase but normally requires more maintenance than a stain. Stains will cost less by the bottle than paint, but will require more bottles than paint.

What to Consider

Before you begin your project, ensure that you have enough materials to complete the job. If you are enlisting the help of friends, be sure to provide enough materials for them to use. Check the weather reports for the day of your wood fence project. High temperatures and high humidity could prevent the paint or stains from drying properly.
