Autumn Maintenance Tips for Your Fence

Keep your wood fence looking great all season long!

Keep your fence looking great all season long!

When you invest in a fence for your home or commercial property you want to know that it will last for years to come. This is why annual maintenance, especially before winter sets in, is so important. Depending on what type of fencing you have your maintenance needs may vary slightly, but for most the same rules will apply.

Inspection

Start your fence maintenance by performing a thorough examination of each section. You will want to keep an eye out for damaged sections, any rot on wood, rust on metals and cracks on vinyl. Any holes or wobbling sections should be noted for later fixes. If you are looking for a great way to carefully inspect each section, use this as an opportunity to give your fence a cleaning, which will require you to get up-close and personal with each board.

Repairs

Once you’ve completed your inspection, begin making any repairs you may have noticed. If there are rotted sections, remove them and replace them. If any latches need oiling or replacing, that should also be done.

Protection

If you have wood, aluminum, or wrought iron fencing, you will know that it can be susceptible to water damage. This is why these types of fencing will need waterproofing layers of paint, stain or powder-coating. While aluminum and wrought iron may note a full paint job every year, keeping an eye out for any scratches and patching them as needed can lengthen the lifespan of a metal fence.

Debris Removal

Lastly, as the season progress be sure to remove debris from the base of your fencing as it falls. Sticks and leaves can hold significant amounts of moisture and cause mold and mildew growth and rot on wooden fences and increase the chances for rust and corrosion on metal. These issues are very easily avoided by making sure to rake around your fence and, in cases of heavy snow, shoveling along the fence line.
