Ready for Some Spring Fence Cleaning?

Spring is on its way — make sure to check your fence off your spring cleaning list this year!

The calendar officially turns to spring this Sunday, March 20th. No more guessing based on the weather and no more pretending like a groundhog knows when spring is coming. Spring — honest-to-goodness spring — will be here in just a few short days. With that in mind, spring cleaning time becomes inevitable. Here are some pro tips for fence cleaning this season.

Fence Cleaning 101

We know that not many people get excited about cleaning. It’s almost like it’s a chore or something. The good news is that fence cleaning is really quite easy, and can even be fun. Here’s how to tackle the three most common fence materials we offer.

  • Woodfences are probably the most difficult to deal with, and even they aren’t that tough. A bucket of soapy water and a scrubbing device (preferably one that won’t scratch up the wood) and a hose will do the trick, but a power washer will really do the trick. Power washing can make your fence cleaning chore a little more enjoyable because, to be honest, pressure washers are kind of fun to use. Feel the power vibrating in your arms as you blast away months or even years of dirt and grime. And the sharp difference between clean and not clean is pretty satisfying. Just be careful with your pressure and spray distance, as the pressure out of that wand can be enough to cut right through wood. After you’ve cleaned it all off and it’s dry, you can also refresh it for springtime with a fresh stain job, and/or protect it from the elements with a seal coat.
  • Vinyl fences are way easier than wood. Bring back the bucket of soapy water and the hose, but this time be super sure that your scrubbing device won’t scuff up your vinyl, as it’ll be way more noticeable than if it were on wood. You can also find spray bottles of vinyl cleaning solutions to assist with those tough dirt spots.
  • Metal fences are the easiest of them all. Whether chain link, steel, or aluminum, it’s easy as pie. You can probably leave the soap inside for this one, as a spray of water and a little scrub with a non-abrasive scrubbing tool will take care of most caked-on dirt. This one is easy enough that you can assign this chore to the kids while you take care of a tougher task (or enjoy the sweet spring air while you supervise).

Spring is also a great time to take care of any other yard or fence maintenance that may need attention before the warm season gets underway. You’ll want to spend a lot more time outside when spring comes, so make sure your outdoor living space is one you can be proud of.
