How to Tell You Need a New Fence

need a new fence

Uh oh, looks like it’s time for a new fence!

With proper care and maintenance, a high quality residential fence can last up to a decade. However, even with the best care, weather and other environmental factors can take their toll on your fence a lot quicker than you might think. Below are some of the signs to look for that let you know you definitely need a new fence.

Rot

If your fence has begun to decay, it is time to get a new one. A decaying fence will only grow less structurally sound and less attractive over time if the rot is allowed to spread. While effective, sealants and preservatives do not last forever and need to be reapplied occasionally in order to remain effectiveness. If only one board is rotted, then replace it. However, if rot has infected most of your fence there’s no reason to replace most of the individual boards piece by piece. Just replace your fence.

Leaning

An older fence will be weaker than it once was. Years of weather and other environmental factors eventually take their toll. Your fence bares the brunt of sun, wind, rain, snow, hail, and all other types of damage. While minor leaning might need your fence needs readjustment, of multiple sections of the fence are leaning all over the place simply aligning it won’t do much good.

Faded Color

A fence is out in the sun all day everyday for years. It is no secret that the sun’s rays bleach objects over time, even if you take necessary precautions. If your once beautiful fence, that was a rich natural color, has finally become grey and pale, it is definitely time to replace it. This heavily damaged wood not only looks worse for wear, but is structurally weaker and more likely to split and fracture. Trying to keep up with repairs on this degrading fence would be a difficult task. In that case, it is time to get a new fence.
