Factors To Consider When Choosing A Fence

Choosing A Fence

Use these factors to help you choose your new fence.

Your home’s fence plays many roles. It can provide protection from unwanted visitors, privacy from prying eyes, and a boost to your overall curb appeal. Because a fence can do so much, it’s important to put some though in the type of fence you choose. You need a fence that matches both your wants and your needs. Here are a couple of things to think about when you’re deciding which fence to get.

Purpose

The first thing you should think about when planning to get a new fence is what its’ purpose will be. This will help you make other decisions about your fence. For example, if your fence is going to primarily be for security, you may opt for a wrought-iron one instead of an wood fence. If you want a more classic fence, you may want to get a wood one.

Materials

Fences are made of different materials, all of which have different advantages. Some fences lend themselves to specific purposes, so if you’ve already figured that out then this step should be easy. It’s also important to remember your budget when choosing your fence’s material. Certain materials are more expensive than others, so keep this in mind when you’re deciding which type to use. Lastly, think about the aesthetic you are trying to achieve with your home’s exterior. The fence material you choose can go a long way towards showing off your personal style.

Maintenance

It’s important to consider the amount of maintenance you’ll have to do on your fence. Materials like wood and iron are subject to the effects of weathering. Wood can rot if it is exposed to moisture, which could result in you have to repair or replace your fence. With an iron fence, large amounts of moisture and humidity can cause it to rust. Adding a finish to your fence can help with these issues. However if you know that you are unwilling or unable to spend time maintaining your fence, you might want to install a low-maintenance one, like vinyl.
