Five Tips for Dog-Proofing Your Fence

By dog-proofing your fence, you’ll have peace of mind every time you let your pet outside.

Making your yard safe and secure for your dog is a serious endeavor, and proper fencing can make all the difference. Finding the right fencing for your pet is especially crucial if you live in a high traffic neighborhood or have an acrobatic pet. By dog-proofing your fence, you’ll have peace of mind every time you let your pet outside.

Add Landscaping

If your pooch is a jumper, or if they like to patrol the yard, using smart landscaping can help keep them away from the fence. Thick shrubs like holly and boxwood can be used to line your fence making it more difficult for your dog to get close. Not only will this add a level of difficulty to any potential escapes, but it may help keep them from being too concerned with what’s going on outside their boundary.

Privacy Additions

Is your dog too nosy? If they’re getting over-excited or too enthusiastic about what’s happening on the other side of the fence adding privacy fencing might be the perfect solution. Slats, garden fencing, or bamboo reed rolls are all options to give you a private yard where you’re dog can play in peace.

Prevent Digging

If your dog likes to dig, there are a few ways to keep them from getting out of the yard. One option is to use an L-shaped fence, where one segment lays flush to the ground about a foot out from the base. This can be buried or left as is. If even an L-shaped fence isn’t enough, you might try a concrete base.

Coyote Rollers

For pets who love to jump and climb, a coyote roller might be the perfect solution to your problems. Meant to stop coyotes from getting a grip on the top of your fence, these will keep most pets contained. Plus, if you live in an area with coyotes, you’ll have an extra level of protection for your pets.

Lean-Ins

Alternatively, you might try lean-in fencing to keep your active pets within your yard. To do this, you will want to use sturdy farm fencing built in at an angle. This is great for keeping animals of all types in and out of your yard.
